The earth belongs to the Lord and everything filling it, The world and everyone living on it. He set it down on the seas And made it hold above the currents. Who gets to climb the hill of the Lord? Who gets to stand in the place that is His? The one whose hands are clean and whose heart is not divided, Who has not given himself to what is empty Or sworn to a thing he knew was false. That one carries away a blessing from the Lord And a clear standing from the God who saves him. This is what the people who look for Him are like, The ones who go searching for Your face. Raise your heads, you gates; Lift, you doors that have always stood. The King of glory is coming in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord, strong and able, The Lord who holds His ground. Raise your heads, you gates; Lift, you doors that have always stood. Who is this King of glory? The Lord over the armies of heaven, He is the King of glory.

About the passage

Psalms 24: The world's owner approaches the gates

Psalm 24 begins so broadly that the holy hill cannot be mistaken for God's entire territory. The Book of Psalms names the earth, its fullness, the world, and its inhabitants as belonging to the Lord before it asks who may ascend into a particular holy place. Access is then described through clean hands, a pure heart, undivided desire, and truthful speech, while blessing and righteousness are still received from the God of salvation. The final movement reverses the direction. Human beings have been asking how to approach God's dwelling; now the gates themselves are commanded to rise for the King of glory. The world's owner does not enter as a visitor seeking permission. Repeated questions identify him as the Lord, strong in battle and Lord of hosts, so worshippers approach carefully while the sovereign approaches as one to whom everything already belongs.
