About the passage
Psalms 25: The pupil who brings his guilt
Psalm 25 makes a pupil out of a person under pressure. The Book of Psalms joins trust, shame, guidance, confession, mercy, enemies, and rescue so closely that none can be isolated as the whole prayer. The speaker who trusts God does not claim to know the route; he asks to be shown, taught, and led. He also asks God to remember ancient mercy rather than youthful sins, then makes the greatness of his iniquity part of the urgency for pardon. Instruction continues after confession. The person who fears the Lord is taught, shown covenant counsel, and still needs feet pulled from a net. By the close, trouble has widened both inwardly and outwardly, but the prayer itself widens too. A lifted individual soul ends by asking God to redeem Israel out of all its troubles, letting personal dependence become language large enough for the people.
