Bring the Lord what is His, you who are strong; Bring Him weight and strength. Bring the Lord the honour His name already has; Bow to Him in the beauty of what is holy. The voice of the Lord is out over the water; The God of weight is thundering, The Lord over deep water. The voice of the Lord carries; The voice of the Lord is full of weight. The voice of the Lord snaps the cedars, Snaps the cedars of Lebanon, And makes the mountains skip like a calf. The voice of the Lord splits flame. The voice of the Lord shakes the open country, Shakes the wild land of Kadesh. The voice of the Lord strips the forest bare And starts the deer into birth, And in His temple everyone is speaking of His weight. The Lord sits above the flood. The Lord sits as King, and He is not moving. The Lord will give strength to His people. The Lord will bless His people With peace.

About the passage

Psalms 29: The voice over the waters and the blessing of peace

Psalm 29 hears a storm without giving the storm independent sovereignty. The Book of Psalms frames the entire display with worship: glory and strength are acknowledged as the Lord's before his voice is heard over waters, cedars, mountains, fire, wilderness, animals, and forest. Seven repetitions of "the voice of the LORD" give the section its pulse, making thunder a sustained declaration rather than scattered noise. Immense things become surprisingly movable. Cedars break, mountains skip, and the wilderness shakes, while the temple answers with glory. Then, after all that motion, the Lord sits. The flood does not unseat him, and everlasting kingship outlasts the weather. The final surprise is that strength does not remain remote power. It is given to the Lord's people, and the psalm's last word is peace. The force that shook the landscape ends in blessing rather than chaos.
