About the passage
Psalms 56: The tears are not lost in the counting
Psalm 56 refuses the idea that trust begins only after fear has disappeared. “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee” allows both realities to inhabit one prayer. Enemies press daily, twist words, watch steps, and wait for an opening to harm the speaker. Their close surveillance is answered by a different kind of attention: God counts the wanderings and keeps the tears as though they were entered in a book. The imagery makes sorrow memorable rather than disposable. The repeated praise of God’s word then returns after the danger has been described, giving the confession of trust more weight because it has passed through the details of the threat. Vows and thanksgiving follow deliverance, not as payment for rescue but as the continuing speech of a preserved life. The psalm ends with feet kept from falling so that life may be lived “before God in the light of the living.”
