About the passage
Psalms 58: When judgment itself needs judging
Psalm 58 attacks corrupted judgment by using the language of judgment against those responsible for it. The opening address is difficult to translate precisely, but the charge is clear: hearts work wickedness and hands weigh out violence where righteousness should have been measured. Poisoned serpent imagery then portrays deliberate refusal to hear. The petitions that follow are among the Psalter’s fiercest. Teeth are to be broken, weapons rendered ineffective, power made to melt away, and apparent durability swept aside before it matures. Even the difficult images keep pressing one point: destructive strength must lose its capacity to continue. The closing battlefield language is equally severe, yet its conclusion is not that private vengeance has become the highest good. The final recognition is that “there is a God that judgeth in the earth.” Human verdicts can be corrupted, but they do not exhaust the moral jurisdiction under which the world stands.
