You have scattered us and shaken all our borders; You have shown Your people days of bitter strain. Heal the breaches opening beneath us; Give us wine that clears the mind again. Raise the banner once again For the ones who fear Your name. Lead us through the broken ground; Save us by Your mighty hand. Gilead and Manasseh are Your portion; Judah bears the scepter You ordained. Moab, Edom, Philistia cannot triumph; Every land remains beneath Your reign. Who will lead us to the fortified city? Who can bring us through the battle's gate? Human help is empty in the conflict; Only God can tread our foes away. Raise the banner once again. Through our God we shall do valiantly.

About the passage

Psalms 60: The promise is spoken across a shaken land

Psalm 60 interprets national defeat with unsettling directness. God is addressed as the one who cast the people off, scattered them, broke the land, and made them drink “the wine of astonishment.” The prayer therefore asks the same God who caused or permitted the rupture to heal its breaches. A banner appears inside the shaking landscape as a sign that belonging has not vanished, and then divine speech names territories and neighboring peoples beneath God’s authority. Yet that declaration does not erase the battlefield problem. The speaker still asks who will lead into the strong city and pointedly turns back to the God who “didst not go out with our armies.” Human help is called vain, but human action is not discarded; the people expect to “do valiantly” through God. Promise and unresolved need remain side by side until the end.
