Hear my voice, O God, within my complaint; Preserve my life from terror of the foe. Hide me from the secret plots of evil, From the restless crowd whose hatred grows. They sharpen every tongue like hidden weapons, Shoot bitter words where innocent ones stand. They encourage one another in their snares, Thinking no one sees or understands. They search the depths of carefully planned darkness, And boast that every scheme is buried deep. But God will loose an arrow without warning; Their own tongues will bring them to defeat. All who see will fear and tell His doing. Wise hearts will consider what is shown. Let the righteous gladly trust the Lord; Let the upright glory in Him alone.

About the passage

Psalms 64: The hidden arrow does not remain hidden

Psalm 64 begins with a threat designed to remain unseen. Enemies sharpen speech like a sword, fit bitter words to arrows, and strengthen one another with the confidence that no one can see the trap. Their organization is real, and the psalm does not confuse evil with carelessness or lack of intelligence. The reversal comes with the compact interruption, "But God." The attackers' sudden strike is answered by a sudden wound, and their own tongue becomes part of their fall. What began in private council ends before an audience. Observers move from seeing to fearing, declaring, and considering God's work, while the righteous respond with gladness and trust. The conspiracy's deepest mistake is not poor planning. It is the assumption that secrecy can place its work beyond the sight of the God being addressed.
