Make a joyful sound to God, all nations; Sing the honor of His mighty name. Say how awesome are the works before us; Every enemy bows beneath His reign. Come and see the deeds of God in history: Sea became dry ground beneath His hand. He rules forever, watching every people; Let no rebel rise in proud command. You tested us like silver in the furnace, Brought us through the fire and through the flood. Though a heavy burden lay upon us, You led us to a wealthy place, O God. I will enter with the vows I promised, Offer what my lips declared in pain. Come and hear, all those who fear the Lord; I will tell what He has done for me. Had I cherished sin, He would not hear me; Blessed be the God who heard my prayer.

About the passage

Psalms 66: Come and see, then come and hear

Psalm 66 moves through three circles of testimony. First, all lands are called to look at God's works, especially the remembered passage through water on dry ground. Then the community speaks of being preserved through a testing that included nets, burdens, humiliation, fire, and water. Survival did not mean an untouched road. Finally, one worshipper steps forward with vows made in trouble, costly offerings, and a personal invitation to hear what God has done for his soul. The progression from public deliverance to communal trial to individual prayer keeps any one scale from exhausting the praise. The final emphasis is especially careful. The worshipper examines the heart and insists that God has heard, yet the conclusion credits mercy rather than leverage. Offerings are paid, testimony is given, and the lasting explanation is that God did not turn away either the prayer or his mercy.
