Give the king Your judgments, God of justice; Give the royal son Your righteousness. Let him judge the people without favor, And defend the poor in their distress. He will save the children of the needy, Break the hand that crushes them for gain. Peace will fall like rain upon the meadow, And the righteous flourish in his reign. He will rule from sea to distant ocean; Kings will bring their gifts from every land. Yet he bends to hear the weak who call him, And redeems their blood from violent hands. Grain will wave upon the highest mountains; Cities bloom like grass across the earth. Every nation calls his name a blessing; Every people shares the promised worth. Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, Who alone performs the wondrous thing. Let His glory fill the earth forever. Amen. Amen. Long live the righteous King.

About the passage

Psalms 72: A king's greatness is measured beside the needy

Psalm 72 prays for a king whose authority receives its shape from God's judgments and righteousness. The first measure of that rule is not military display or accumulated wealth but what happens to poor people, needy children, and those facing an oppressor. The same standard continues when the reign expands from sea to sea and distant kings bring gifts. The reason given for such honor is startlingly small in scale: a needy person cries with no helper, and the king delivers him. Rain, grain, flourishing cities, enduring name, and international blessing all grow around that concern for life. The poem stretches beyond the easy boundaries of one ordinary reign, which is why its language later feeds messianic expectation. Yet the close prevents royal greatness from becoming self-contained. The final blessing belongs to the Lord God of Israel, whose glory, not the king's, is asked to fill the whole earth.
