About the passage
Psalms 75: The raised horn does not appoint the judge
Psalm 75 begins with repeated thanks for a nearness known through deeds, then hears judgment spoken into a world that feels unstable. The earth and its inhabitants may seem to dissolve, yet the judge is also the one who bears up its pillars. That image makes the warning to arrogant power especially pointed. A raised horn and stiff neck can advertise strength, but visible self-exaltation does not decide who stands. Promotion is removed from the horizon of human calculation and placed under God's judgment, which puts down one and sets up another. The cup in the Lord's hand makes that judgment unavoidable rather than accidental, while the singer answers with declaration and praise. The final return to horns completes the reversal. The wicked lose the power they raised for themselves, and the righteous are lifted by an agency beyond themselves.
