Do not keep Your silence, God of Israel; Enemies are roaring, heads are raised. They conspire against the ones You treasure, Planning that Your people's name be erased. They have joined their strength together, Many kingdoms bound by one design. Let their schemes become like chaff before You; Scatter them beneath the storm and fire. As You broke the armies in the ancient days, Let their proud nobility fall down. Fill their faces with a holy trembling, So they seek the Lord they once denied. Let them know that You alone are Lord, Most High above the earth.

About the passage

Psalms 83: A coalition seeks to erase Israel’s name

Psalm 83 hears a coalition making noise while God appears silent. The allied peoples speak with one purpose: to cut Israel off from being a nation and erase its name from remembrance. Their threat is presented not only as hostility toward Israel but as confederacy “against thee.” The prayer responds by reaching back to enemies defeated in the Book of Judges, using Midian, Sisera, Jabin, Oreb, Zeeb, Zebah, and Zalmunna as precedents rather than pretending a victory has already occurred. Wind, stubble, fire, and storm then picture the coalition losing the control it seems to possess. The ending keeps a hard tension intact. Shame is requested so that God’s name may be sought, yet lasting confusion and destruction are also requested, all under the final desire that the Most High be known over the whole earth.
