About the passage
Psalms 84: The birds are already at home in the courts
Psalm 84 measures blessing by nearness to the living God. The speaker longs so intensely for the courts of the Lord that a sparrow and swallow become almost enviable: the birds have already found a home near the sanctuary. The poem then shifts from those who dwell there to those still traveling, whose hearts are set on the way to Zion and whose route can pass through a difficult valley. They move “from strength to strength” without the journey being described as easy. A brief prayer for God’s anointed gives way to a deliberately uneven comparison: one day in the courts is better than a thousand elsewhere, and a place at the threshold is preferred to residence in wickedness. The three blessings move from dwelling, to journeying, to trusting, all because the desired place is valued for the God who is there.
