Bow Your ear, for I am poor and needy; Guard my life, for I have trusted You. Be merciful through every hour I call You; Bring the soul of Your servant into joy. Teach me Your way, O Lord; I will walk within Your truth. Unite my heart to fear Your name, And I will praise You with my whole heart. No god among the nations is beside You; No works compare with all that You have done. All the peoples You created will adore You, For You alone are great and God. Proud men rise and violent ones pursue me, But You are full of mercy, slow to wrath. Show a sign of good and strengthen Your servant; Let the ones who hate me see and turn back.

About the passage

Psalms 86: A divided heart asks to be made one

Psalm 86 is intensely personal without becoming narrow. The speaker repeatedly calls himself poor, needy, servant, and one who trusts God, grounding every appeal in dependence rather than self-sufficiency. Yet the prayer quickly widens until all nations are envisioned coming to worship the God who made them. At the center stands one of the psalm’s most revealing petitions: “unite my heart to fear thy name.” The request for mercy is therefore matched by a request for inner coherence and instruction. Praise “with all my heart” answers the desire for an undivided heart. When proud and violent opponents appear, the speaker does not answer them merely with his own strength, but with God’s compassion, graciousness, patience, mercy, and truth. The final request is for help visible enough that enemies can see whose servant has been upheld.
