About the passage
Psalms 88: Prayer continues where the poem gives no dawn
Psalm 88 is remarkable for what it does not do. It never reports rescue, never turns into thanksgiving, and never lets morning become the expected emotional reversal. Yet it begins by addressing the Lord as “God of my salvation,” and that name remains meaningful precisely because the darkness persists. The speaker describes himself as near the grave, without strength, shut in, overwhelmed by waves, separated from acquaintances, and afflicted from youth. He repeatedly says that God has done or permitted the conditions he is lamenting, bringing the sharpest perception of abandonment directly into prayer. Questions about praise in the grave become arguments for continued life. Even the final return to morning prayer leads straight back into “why castest thou off my soul?” The poem closes in darkness, but it closes after continued address, refusing both despairing silence and a rescue it has not actually received.
