About the passage
Psalms 90: Brief lives ask that their work endure
Psalm 90 places the brief span of human life against the everlasting life of God and refuses to treat mortality as a merely neutral observation. The Lord has been a dwelling place through generations and exists before mountains or earth, while human beings return to destruction and pass like yesterday, a night watch, sleep, flood, or grass that withers by evening. The poem then places sin and divine anger inside that brevity, asking for wisdom rather than simply lamenting aging. “Teach us to number our days” turns limited time into a request for a changed heart. The final section asks God to return, satisfy with mercy, balance years of affliction with gladness, show his work to the next generation, and establish “the work of our hands.” Mortal hands cannot make themselves permanent, so they ask the everlasting God to give endurance to what they build.
