It is good to thank the Lord And sing praises to the Highest, Showing mercy in the morning, Faithfulness through every night. With the strings and measured music, I rejoice in what You made. How profound are all Your counsels; Foolish hearts cannot perceive. Though the wicked spring like grass, They arise only to perish. But You, Lord, remain exalted Everlasting over all. The righteous flourishes like palm trees, Growing strong like cedar wood. Planted in the house of God, They bear fruit when they are old. They proclaim the Lord is upright, Rock in whom no wrong is found.

About the passage

Psalms 92: Grass rises quickly, but planted trees keep bearing

Psalm 92 begins with praise spread across morning and night, accompanied by strings and grounded in the works of God’s hands. It then asks the reader to look more carefully at what appears to flourish. The wicked really do spring up, but their growth is grass: vivid, quick, and unable to prove permanence. God, by contrast, is “most high for evermore.” The righteous also flourish, but the image changes to palm and cedar, trees planted in the house of the Lord. Their location matters as much as their size, because their endurance is received rather than self-produced. The poem refuses to treat old age as the end of usefulness. These planted trees still bear fruit and remain vigorous. Their continued life functions as testimony, declaring that the Lord is upright and that no unrighteousness is found in the rock who sustains them.
