Come, let our singing rise to the Lord; Shout toward the rock that rescues us. Step into His presence carrying thanks; Lift a glad psalm where He can hear it. No power stands as high as the Lord. The deep places of earth and the mountain peaks are His. Sea and dry land came out of His hands; Bend low before the One who shaped us. He is our God, and we His people, Sheep within His guiding hand. Today, should His voice reach you, Let nothing turn your heart to stone. Do not repeat the wilderness rebellion, Testing God though wonders stood in sight. Forty years He grieved that generation; They would not enter into rest.

About the passage

Psalms 95: The singing assembly is asked to hear

Psalm 95 starts as a full-throated call to worship and ends with a divine oath excluding a generation from rest. The shift is not a change of subject but the point of the poem. The Lord is praised as great King and Maker of sea, dry land, depths, and hills. The same hands that formed the world hold the people as sheep in a pasture. Then, inside the statement of belonging, comes the word “To day” and the demand to hear God’s voice. The wilderness generation becomes the warning because it saw divine works yet did not know divine ways. Exposure to miracles did not guarantee a listening heart. The final refusal of rest therefore reaches back into the opening music. The worshippers can sing because they belong to the Shepherd, but the psalm insists that correct worship also means becoming hearers rather than using belonging as a substitute for obedience.
