About the passage
Psalms 96: The whole earth joins the announcement of the King
Psalm 96 sends a new song outward until the whole earth, the families of the nations, and creation itself are involved. The song has news to announce: salvation is shown from day to day, glory is declared among the nations, and the Lord is distinguished from idols because he made the heavens. The nations are not merely informed from a distance. They are summoned to give glory, bring an offering, enter the courts, worship, and say among other nations that the Lord reigns. That reign is characterized by an established world and righteous judgment. The final verses let sea, field, trees, heaven, and earth celebrate the Lord’s coming. Judgment is the reason for the rejoicing because the coming King judges with righteousness and truth. The poem therefore joins mission, worship, creation, and justice inside a single announcement of who rules.
