Give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good; His mercy lasts forever. Let the redeemed of God declare it, Gathered from the east and west. Some wandered hungry through the desert, Finding neither city nor a home. They cried to God, and He delivered, Leading them by one straight road. Some sat in darkness, bound in iron, Rebels crushed beneath their chains. They cried to God, and He broke the prison, Shattering the gates of brass. Some drew near to death through foolish living; Some went down to sea beneath the storm. They cried to God, and He sent healing, Stilled the waves, and brought them home. Oh, that people would praise the Lord for mercy, For His wonders to the children of men. He satisfies the longing soul And fills the hungry heart with good. Whoever is wise will mark these stories And understand the lovingkindness of the Lord.

About the passage

Psalms 107: Different troubles, one recurring cry

Psalm 107 gathers very different troubles under one repeated cry. Wanderers have no city, prisoners sit in iron because of rebellion, the sick approach death, and experienced sailors discover that skill cannot command a storm. The Book of Psalms uses the same rhythm of distress, prayer, rescue, and thanksgiving without pretending every crisis has the same cause or needs the same remedy. A road answers wandering. Broken bars answer prison. Healing answers failing life. Calm answers the sea. Then the chapter widens into changing landscapes and reversed social positions, where dry ground becomes water and princes become wanderers. Wisdom, in the end, means observing the whole pattern closely enough to recognize lovingkindness without forcing every life into one formula.
