About the passage
Psalms 108: An old song becomes a new appeal
Psalm 108 is built from words heard elsewhere, but their new arrangement changes their force. The chapter begins with a fixed heart and public praise before any crisis is named. Then the beloved need rescue, God claims the land as his own, and the speaker admits that the people have experienced rejection and cannot secure victory by human help alone. The Book of Psalms places confidence and unresolved need in the same breath. Divine ownership of Shechem, Gilead, Judah, Moab, Edom, and Philistia does not make the strong city disappear. Promise still has to meet an actual wall. The final confidence is therefore not swagger. The people expect to act valiantly, but only because they expect God to do what human strength cannot.
