God of my praise, do not remain in silence. Wicked mouths surround me with deceit. For my love they answer me with hatred, Yet I give myself to prayer. Stand at my right hand, Lord, For I am poor and wounded in my heart. I fade like evening shadow, Shaken off like one small locust. Let the lying accuser face the judgment That his cruelty sought to place on me. Let the harm he loved return upon him; Let his curse become his covering. But deal with me according to Your mercy. Save me for Your faithful name is good. Then they will know Your hand has done it; They may curse, but You will bless. I will praise the Lord among the multitude, For He stands beside the poor.

About the passage

Psalms 109: An accusation answered at the right hand

Psalm 109 is one of the most difficult prayers in The Book of Psalms because wounded petition sits beside curses that reach into a household’s future. The opening complaint centers on lies, hatred, and good repaid with evil. The middle imagines condemnation, lost office, poverty, fatherless children, erased memory, and cursing returned to the one who loved it. The exact voice of that curse sequence is debated, and the chapter gives no quotation marks to settle the issue. What becomes clear by the end is a carefully built reversal. The accuser who stands at a right hand near the beginning is answered by God standing at the right hand of the poor. Hostile mouths remain present, but the final mouth is the petitioner’s, praising in public.
