I love the Lord because He heard my voice, He bent His ear when I began to call. Death surrounded me and sorrow found me; Then I called His name and He delivered. Return unto your rest, O soul, For the Lord has dealt with you in kindness. He delivered eyes from tears and feet from falling; I will walk before Him in the land of life. What shall I render to the Lord For all His benefits to me? I will take the cup of salvation, Call His name, and pay my vows. Precious in the sight of God Is the death of those who serve Him. You have loosed my bonds; I will offer thanks within Your courts.

About the passage

Psalms 116: The rescued voice returns to the congregation

Psalm 116 is shaped by a voice that was heard when death felt near and now wants that rescue to be heard by others. The Book of Psalms moves from a private cry to public thanksgiving in Jerusalem. Along the way, deliverance is measured through soul, eyes, feet, rest, breath, vows, and loosened bonds. The speaker does not treat survival as proof that dependence is over. Because God inclined his ear, he plans to keep calling for the rest of his life. Even his answer to divine benefits begins by receiving “the cup of salvation.” The chapter ends in the courts of the LORD’s house, where the same voice once compressed into “deliver my soul” now has room to praise before the people.
