About the passage
Psalms 117: Two verses make room for all nations
Psalm 117 is the shortest chapter in The Book of Psalms, but its horizon is enormous. Two verses move from “all ye nations” and “all ye people” to the mercy experienced by a particular community and the truth of the LORD that endures forever. The chapter does not solve the tension between particular history and universal praise by erasing either side. Israel’s received kindness becomes the reason a wider human audience is invited to speak. Paul later quotes the opening call while discussing Gentile praise, but the universal reach is already explicit in the psalm itself. Brevity gives the chapter concentration rather than smallness. Strong mercy and enduring truth are enough to open a place in praise for every nation named by the summons.
