Unto You I lift my eyes, You who dwell within the heavens. As the servant watches for the master's hand, We are watching for the Lord. Our eyes look to the Lord our God Until He shows us mercy. Have mercy, Lord, have mercy, For contempt has filled our lives. The proud have poured their scorn upon us; Still our eyes remain on You.

About the passage

Psalms 123: Eyes lifted above the contempt

Psalm 123 gives waiting a visible posture. A single voice lifts its eyes to the one who dwells in the heavens, then becomes a community watching the LORD as servants watch the hand from which decisive action must come. The Book of Psalms makes “until” important. Mercy is expected, but no deadline is supplied, so dependence has duration. The second half explains why the community is looking upward: contempt has filled it to excess. The same language of abundance is repeated until scorn feels like an unwanted saturation. Those who inflict it are described as at ease and proud, while the petitioners remain dependent on mercy. Nothing in the ending reports that the proud have changed. The psalm instead gives the despised community a directed gaze and a repeated prayer that do not depend on receiving recognition from the people who hold them in contempt.
