About the passage
Psalms 127: The builder works, but cannot manufacture the blessing
Psalm 127 refuses to separate human work from divine dependence. Builders still build, watchmen still keep watch, and laborers still rise early, but none of those actions can bear the full weight of security by themselves. The Book of Psalms calls that burden vain when work is treated as though it alone controls the outcome. Sleep appears as a gift to the beloved, not as failure to squeeze one more productive hour from the day. Then the chapter turns from the house as a structure to the household that gives it a future. Children are called an inheritance and compared with arrows, and the family eventually appears at the public gate. The same logic governs both halves: real human participation matters, but lasting security, rest, continuity, and future life are finally received rather than manufactured by effort alone.
