Psalms 131: A quieted soul beside its mother

Psalm 131 is only three verses, but it gives humility a surprisingly concrete form. The speaker begins by denying haughtiness of heart, loftiness of eyes, and involvement in matters too high for him. The Book of Psalms does not turn this into contempt for knowledge or difficult questions. The concern is self-exaltation, the attempt to occupy a place beyond proper measure. Then the chapter leaves abstract language and gives humility a domestic image: a weaned child quiet beside its mother. The child is no longer defined only by immediate demand, yet the relationship has not ended. Dependence becomes calm without becoming independence. The speaker says he has quieted himself, making the posture deliberate rather than accidental. The last line opens the small scene toward the entire people, calling Israel to hope in the LORD from now and forever. A private posture becomes a communal orientation.
