Hear my prayer according to Your faithfulness; Do not enter judgment with Your servant. No one living stands as righteous before You; Enemies have crushed my life into the ground. My spirit fails; my heart is overwhelmed. I remember all the works of ancient days. I stretch my hands like thirsty land before You; Answer quickly, or my strength will fade. Cause me to hear Your mercy in the morning, For in You I place my trust. Teach me the way that I should walk, For I lift my soul to You. Deliver me and teach me to do Your will. Let Your good Spirit lead on level ground. Revive me for the honor of Your name; Bring my soul from trouble in Your justice.

About the passage

Psalms 143: A servant asking for mercy, direction, and life

Psalm 143 asks for righteous help without making a claim to flawless innocence. The speaker appeals to God's faithfulness and righteousness, then immediately asks not to enter judgment because no living person can be justified before him. Enemy pursuit has crushed his life into darkness and left his spirit overwhelmed, so memory reaches back toward God's earlier works while his hands reach forward in need. The prayer then asks for more than removal from danger. The speaker wants to hear lovingkindness in the morning, know the way he should walk, learn to do God's will, and be led by the good Spirit. The ending remains severe toward the enemies, but the final identity is still "thy servant," preserving dependence rather than replacing it with a late claim of sinlessness.
