Blessed be the Lord, my rock, Who trains my hands and fingers for the battle. He is fortress, mercy, shield, deliverer; Under Him I find my refuge. What is man that You would know him? Human days are shadows passing by. Bow the heavens, touch the mountains, Send Your hand and rescue from great waters. I will sing a new song to You, Play upon the strings of praise. You give victory unto kings And save Your servant from the sword. Let our children grow like strong young plants, Our daughters shaped like pillars of a palace. Let our barns be full and flocks increase, And let no cry of sorrow fill the streets. Blessed are the people who receive such good; Blessed are the people whose God is the Lord.

About the passage

Psalms 144: The trained hands and the life beyond the battle

Psalm 144 begins with trained hands, fortified protection, and royal rule, then interrupts that strength with the brevity of human life. The warrior is still like a passing shadow. From there the prayer asks for heaven to bow, mountains to smoke, lightning to scatter enemies, and a hand from above to rescue the speaker from great waters and deceptive people. A new song appears before the danger has disappeared, keeping anticipated praise inside an unresolved plea. The closing picture shifts from battle to the life battle is meant to protect: growing sons and daughters, full stores, abundant flocks, strong working animals, secure borders, and streets without cries of distress. In the KJV's sequence, communal peace and provision become the desired horizon of deliverance.
