Give God praise inside His holy place. Give Him praise across the reach of His power. Praise Him for what His strength has done; Praise Him on the scale of His own greatness. Bring the trumpet to it, Bring the lute and the harp, Bring the tambourine, the dancing, the strings, Bring the pipe and the singing voice. Bring the cymbals and let them sound. Wake up every instrument there is. Lift up every living voice there is. Let every breathing thing join in. Give praise to the Lord.

About the passage

Psalms 150: Everything that breathes joins the final summons

Psalm 150 closes the collection by stripping praise down to place, reason, means, and breath. Sanctuary and firmament give the opening a scale larger than one room, while God's mighty acts and excellent greatness provide the grounds. The psalm does not introduce another danger or rehearse another rescue. Instead, it turns to sound: trumpet, psaltery, harp, timbrel, strings, pipes, cymbals, and dance accumulate until the catalogue itself can no longer contain the summons. The final expansion reaches beyond musicians and named instruments to "every thing that hath breath." That last qualification is broader than skill, office, or location. Praise receives the final position in the Psalms without canceling the laments, severe petitions, conflicts, and unresolved questions that remain part of the collection it concludes.
