[Intro]
[Verse 1]
The seal was wax and the wax went white,
It cracked like bone in the failing light.
A voice came down like a rolling stone,
Come and see what the seal has shown.
A pale white horse on the open hill,
A bow in hand and the hand was still.
They set a wreath on the rider's head
And out he rode where the road runs red.
[Verse 2]
The second seal and the second cry,
A horse the colour of a burning sky.
They put a long blade in his hand
And took the peace right off the land.
Brother turned in the market square,
Nobody struck and the strike was there.
A woman pulled her child from the door
And the smoke came rolling out for more.
[Chorus]
The day has come, the day of wrath,
And there is no cover on that path.
No wall to keep it, no coin to buy,
No deeper hole, no higher sky.
The king, the slave, the whole wide land :
Who shall be able to stand?
Who shall be able to stand?
[Verse 3]
The third seal broke and the horse was black,
A set of scales on the rider's back.
A day of work for a day of bread,
And the beam hung level, and nothing said.
Three of barley for the same thin coin,
The line went quiet down the line.
But the oil kept sweet and the wine kept full
Behind the arch where the rich men pull.
[Verse 4]
The fourth seal turned and the fourth horse came
Green as a corpse, and Death its name.
And something walked in the dust behind
That never took a shape you'd find.
A quarter of the earth laid low,
The smoke lay flat and the light went slow.
Three lean dogs at the edge of the field
Standing where the harvest kneeled.
[Chorus]
The day has come, the day of wrath,
And there is no cover on that path.
No wall to keep it, no coin to buy,
No deeper hole, no higher sky.
The king, the slave, the whole wide land :
Who shall be able to stand?
Who shall be able to stand?
[Bridge]
Under the altar, under the stone,
Where the blood ran down and soaked the bone,
They lifted up a single cry:
How long, O Lord? How long? How high?
And a white robe came to every one,
And a voice said rest : it is not done.
Rest a little. Rest and wait.
Rest a little longer yet.
[Verse 5]
The sixth seal broke and the ground came apart,
A crack ran open like a splitting heart.
The sun went black as a woven sack,
The moon came up and the moon came back
Red as the thing it could not hide.
The stars came down the mountainside
Like green figs stripped in a driving wind,
And the sky rolled shut on where we'd been.
[Verse 6]
The islands dragged and the mountains slid,
And every man went where the dark was hid.
Seven in a cleft of the burning stone,
A crown, a collar, and every one alone.
They turned their faces to the rock and cried,
Fall on us : let the mountain hide
What we cannot look upon.
And the light came on. And the light came on.
[Final Chorus]
The day has come, the day of wrath,
And there is no cover on that path.
No wall to keep it, no coin to buy,
No deeper hole, no higher sky.
The king, the slave, the whole wide land :
Who shall be able to stand?
[Outro]
One left standing on the open ground,
Back to the dark and the world coming down.
Not a crown on him, not a sword in hand.
Who shall be able to stand?
Who shall be able to stand?
