Let him draw me near with tenderness; His love is sweeter than the richest wine. His name is perfume poured into the air; Draw me after you, and we will run. The king has brought me into inner chambers; I am dark from labor, yet still lovely. Do not stare because the sun has marked me; My brothers kept me working in their vines. I guarded every vineyard but my own; Tell me where you rest your flock at noon. Follow where the shepherds leave their footprints; Feed your young ones near their quiet tents. You are graceful as a royal mare Moving through the chariots of Pharaoh. Gold and silver ornaments will frame you; Beauty answers beauty when you come. My beloved rests like myrrh beside me, Like a cluster blooming in the field. Your eyes are gentle, clear as doves; Our resting place is green. Cedar beams are rising over us, And fir trees make the shelter of our love.

About the passage

Song of Solomon 1: Love begins in the middle of a conversation

The Song Of Solomon opens without ceremony. Desire speaks first, comparing love with wine and a beloved name with perfume poured into the air. The woman then answers the gaze directed toward her by naming both her sun-darkened appearance and her beauty, while the vineyard language hints at labour imposed by others and care withheld from her own interests. Praise becomes increasingly extravagant without becoming one-sided. Pharaoh's horses, gold, silver, myrrh, henna, doves, cedar, and fir are all recruited to describe presence, value, fragrance, and attraction. The lovers answer each other rather than leaving one person as a silent object of admiration. By the close, a green bed and tree-like rafters create a shared space in which royal splendour and natural abundance belong to the same conversation.
