I am a flower of the open country, A lily growing low within the valley. Among the daughters I am one small blossom; Among the trees, my beloved stands alone. Under his shadow I have found my rest; His fruit is sweet upon my tongue. He brought me to the house of celebration, And love was lifted like a banner over me. Strengthen me with fruit, refresh me with sweetness; I am overcome by love. Arise, my love, my beautiful one, come away. The winter has ended, and the rain is gone. Flowers appear across the earth; The season of singing has returned. The dove is heard again within the land; Figs are ripening, and the vines give fragrance. Rise from the cleft and let me see your face; Your voice is lovely in the morning air. Catch the little foxes spoiling tender vines; Guard the love that has begun to bloom. My beloved is mine, and I am his; He moves among the lilies until daybreak.

About the passage

Song of Solomon 2: The season opens, and love keeps its own time

Season, movement, and timing dominate Song Of Solomon 2. The lovers first answer each other through flowers, fruit, shade, sweetness, and an embrace, but the scene closes with a charge that love not be stirred before it desires. Then the beloved arrives with the speed of a gazelle, and spring itself seems to gather behind his invitation: winter is gone, birds are heard, figs form, and vines give their scent. Nearness is still not automatic. A hidden dove must be called into sight and sound, and tender vines require protection from small foxes. The woman then declares reciprocal belonging before addressing the swift beloved again across the mountains. The chapter is full of abundance, but it never confuses abundance with possession of the future. Love is alive, growing, vulnerable, and still capable of movement.
