Grain heads brushing against their hands,

Sabbath sun across the field.

Hungry men began to pluck them.

Watchful eyes began to build a charge.

"Why do they do what is not lawful?"

Jesus answered need with David,

bread once taken in the house of God.

The Sabbath was made for man,

not man for the Sabbath.

And the Son of Man is Lord

even of the Sabbath.

Another Sabbath.

Another room.

A withered hand.

Accusing eyes.

They were watching for the healing,

not to praise it,

but to build a case.

Jesus called the man to center.

Is it lawful

to do good

or to do evil?

To save life

or to kill?

No answer.

Anger in His eyes.

Grief beneath it.

Hard hearts all around.

Stretch forth thine hand.

Fingers opened.

Strength returned.

The hand was whole.

The Sabbath was made for man.

Mercy stood in the middle.

The Son of Man is Lord,

and a broken hand was restored.

The healed man left with two good hands.

The Pharisees left with the Herodians,

planning how to destroy the One who healed him.
