Lyrics

Mary rose with haste and climbed the Judah hills,

Carrying a secret larger than the road could ever fill.

She crossed the house of Zacharias, called Elisabeth by name,

And the hidden child leaped before the mothers could explain.

The Spirit filled the older woman; joy became her voice:

Blessed is the woman, blessed is the child of promise.

Before the world could see Him, John rejoiced within,

And faith was called blessed for believing what had been.

Blessed among women,

Blessed is the fruit she bears.

Blessed is the one who trusted

That the Lord would keep His word there.

Mary answered wonder with a song that turned the world:

Her soul magnified the Lord who saw the lowly girl.

The Mighty One had done great things; holy was His name,

And mercy crossed the generations, never growing tame.

The proud were scattered in the thoughts they held inside,

The mighty left their seats while lowly ones could rise.

The hungry filled with good things, the wealthy sent away,

A kingdom of reversals breaking into day.

Mercy from generation to generation,

Strength in the arm that scatters pride.

The lowly lifted, the hungry given,

The promise standing on Israel's side.

Mercy from generation to generation,

Abraham's word has not grown old.

What heaven remembered through the ages

Now begins to take its hold.

God had helped His servant Israel, mindful of His grace,

The covenant with Abraham still running through this place.

No empire set the measure, no throne could make it cease,

Two mothers in one household carried histories of peace.

Three months Mary stayed there where the unborn prophet stirred,

Then she walked the road returning with the weight of Gabriel's word.

Mercy from generation to generation,

Strength in the arm that scatters pride.

The lowly lifted, the hungry given,

The promise standing on Israel's side.

Blessed among women,

Blessed is the fruit she bears.

The Mighty One has done great things,

And mercy fills the years.
