The book of Habakkuk begins with a question.
How long, O Lord?
And it ends with faith that still sings in the famine.
The law feels torn and weakened The wicked circle round The
righteous stand in silence While justice falls to ground I brought
you all my questions I brought you all my fear And
still the heavens answered Stand watch and wait here
I will stand upon the watchtower I will listen through the
night Though the answer makes me tremble Still your word will
prove right The vision waits appointed It will speak and will
not lie The just shall live by faith When they cannot
live by sight You
showed me nations rising You showed me kingdoms proud Their horses
fierce as evening wolves Their conquests like a cloud But woe
to Him who gathers what was never His to hold. Woe
to hands of violence and hearts that worship gold. The earth
is full of shaking, the idols cannot speak. But the Lord
is in His temple, let the whole earth bow in peace.
I will stand upon the watchtower I will listen through the
night Though the answer makes me tremble Still your word will
prove right The vision waits appointed It will speak and will
not lie The just shall live by faith When they cannot
live by sight Oh
Lord, I have heard thy speech And I was afraid
In wrath, remember mercy In
the fire, make a way You came from ancient
mountains With brightness in your hand The sun and moon stood
silent When your glory filled the land Though the fig
tree shall not blossom Though the vine gives no wine Though
the olive fails its promise And the fields leave us behind
Though the flock is cut from shelter Though the stalls stand
bare and still Yet I will rejoice in the Lord I
will trust His holy will I will stand upon the
watchtower I will worship through the night Though the answer makes
me tremble Still your word will prove right The vision waits
appointed It will speak and will not lie The just shall
live by faith When they cannot live by sight
Oh, the Lord God is my strength He makes my feet
to rise Like the deer upon the high places Above
the breaking skies
