When the people had been baptized, Jesus entered Jordan too,

And as He prayed the heaven opened into view.

The Holy Ghost descended in a body like a dove,

And heaven named Him Son, beloved and well approved in love.

No crowd-made crown was given, no earthly throne begun,

Only water, prayer, the Spirit, and the naming of the Son.

Then full of Holy Ghost He turned from Jordan's shore,

Led into the wilderness where testing waited forty days more.

Beloved Son in the wilderness,

Hungry, tested, standing fast.

Bread could not replace the word,

Kingdoms could not buy His heart.

Beloved Son in the wilderness,

No shortcut, spectacle, or throne.

Every lure the tempter offered

Met obedience standing strong.

Forty days without the bread that hunger begged to find,

The tempter pressed the stones as proof and appetite combined.

But life was never measured by the loaf a hand could hold,

The word of God was nourishment no wilderness could fold.

Then kingdoms flashed before Him, power offered instantly,

Authority in exchange for one false act of loyalty.

He answered with the worship due to God and God alone,

And every borrowed kingdom lost the brightness it had shown.

Then Jerusalem and temple height became the final stage,

A Scripture-shaped temptation twisted from the sacred page.

If angels guard the faithful, why not force the sign to fall?

But faith does not command God to perform at human call.

The Lord must not be tempted, and the challenge met its end,

The devil left Him for a season, waiting for another bend.

Jordan named Him beloved,

Desert proved no word could buy Him.

Hunger pressed against Him,

Empire could not turn Him.

Height could not provoke Him,

Scripture could not be made a snare.

The Son came out of testing

Still obedient, still there.

Beloved Son in the wilderness,

Hungry, tested, standing fast.

Bread could not replace the word,

Kingdoms could not buy His heart.

Beloved Son in the wilderness,

The tempter spent his final claim.

He departed for a season,

But the Son remained the same.
