Lyrics

Two disciples left Jerusalem for Emmaus that same day,
Talking through the shattered things that would not fit or fade.
Jesus drew near and walked with them, but recognition stayed restrained,
Their eyes were held from knowing Him, their faces marked by pain.
He asked what words had passed between them, why their steps were sad,
And Cleopas wondered how a stranger missed the news they'd had.
They spoke of Jesus of Nazareth, mighty in deed and word,
Condemned by chief priests, crucified, though hope in Him had stirred.
They trusted He would redeem Israel, but now the third day came,
And women from the tomb had brought a strange, astonishing claim.
The body was not found there; angels said that He was living,
Others reached the sepulchre and found the witness matching.
Still the pieces would not settle, grief kept shaping what they knew,
Until the Stranger opened Scripture and began to walk them through.
Were not our hearts burning within us
While He talked along the way?
Were not our hearts burning within us
As the Scriptures opened day by day?
Moses, prophets, suffering, glory,
Lines once scattered gathered flame.
They knew Him in the breaking bread,
Then He vanished from their gaze.
He showed how Christ must suffer before entering His glory,
Beginning with Moses and the prophets, drawing out the ancient story.
Near the village He made as though His road would carry on,
But they urged Him to remain because the daylight nearly gone.
At the table He took bread, blessed and broke it in their sight,
Then their eyes were opened fully, and they knew Him in that night.
No sleep could hold them in Emmaus,
No dark road could make them stay.
They rose that hour for Jerusalem,
Retracing every mile that day.
The eleven and the others
Had a resurrection word,
And the travelers added how He'd been
Known when breaking bread occurred.
Were not our hearts burning within us
While He talked along the way?
Were not our hearts burning within us
As the Scriptures opened day by day?
Grief had made the road seem final,
But the road became a flame.
They returned to tell the gathered ones:
The Lord had risen indeed.
