When Jesus drew near Jerusalem and saw the city spread,
The road of celebration met the tears that He would shed.
He beheld the walls and rooftops, all the stones the crowds adored,
And wept because the city did not know what peace was for.
If only in that day she'd known the things that peace could bring,
But now they stood concealed from eyes that would not know their King.
He wept over Jerusalem,
While the city filled the view.
Peace had come within her reach,
But she did not know what drew near.
He wept over Jerusalem,
Not with anger cold and far,
But with tears before the judgment,
For the city that she was.
Days would come when enemies would raise a trench around,
Compass every side and press the living toward the ground.
Children within the city, stones dismantled one by one,
Nothing left upon another when the coming siege was done.
The reason stood inside the grief, sharper than the coming sword:
She did not know the visitation when it came before her doors.
The prophecy and tears
Belong together on the road.
Judgment was not spoken
By a heart untouched or cold.
The city lay before Him,
Peace hidden from her eyes,
And He kept moving toward her
Though He knew the coming price.
He wept over Jerusalem,
While the city filled the view.
Peace had come within her reach,
But she did not know what drew near.
He wept over Jerusalem,
The stones would feel the war.
The time of visitation passed,
And still He walked toward her door.
