The day of unleavened bread arrived when Passover was slain,
And Peter went with John to make the upper room prepared.
A man with water led the sign, a furnished room was found,
And evening gathered Jesus with the twelve around.
He had desired this Passover before the suffering came,
A final table before arrest would break the night in shame.
Bread broken, cup poured,
A covenant set before them.
Body given, blood poured out,
The coming cross already spoken.
Bread broken, cup poured,
The table held the cost.
Before the nails, before the hill,
The meal pointed to the cross.
He took the bread, gave thanks, and broke it for the men who shared,
Naming it with meaning tied to what His body soon would bear.
After supper came the cup, the new covenant in blood,
Poured for them as betrayal's hand still reached where friendship stood.
The table carried tenderness and warning side by side,
For one who ate among them had already chosen crime.
Then strangely, after covenant, dispute rose in the room:
Which of them was greatest, who deserved the higher plume?
Jesus turned their measure over: rulers love the highest seat,
But greatness in His kingdom bends toward service at the feet.
He promised them a kingdom, tables, thrones, and coming place,
Yet Simon faced a nearer trial before that future grace.
Satan desired to sift him,
But prayer had gone ahead.
Peter swore himself ready
For prison and for death.
Before the cock would finish,
Three denials would be known,
And the road that once had welcomed them
Would sharpen into stone.
Purse and scrip were mentioned,
The hour had changed its tone.
Bread broken, cup poured,
A covenant set before them.
Body given, blood poured out,
The coming cross already spoken.
Bread broken, cup poured,
Betrayal at the board.
The feast became a threshold
To the darkest hours before.
