3 John

3 John opens with “That Thy Soul Prospereth” and carries its history toward “Demetrius Hath Good Report.” A private letter from the elder to a man named Gaius, and it is the only letter in the New Testament written to one person about a church problem rather than to a church. Demetrius has a good report of all men, and of the truth itself, and we also bear record, which is three witnesses for one man who was most likely carrying this letter.

    That Thy Soul Prospereth

A private letter from the elder to a man named Gaius, and it is the only letter in the New Testament written to one person about a church problem rather than to a church. Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.

    Fellowhelpers to the Truth

Gaius has been housing and supplying travelling preachers he had never met, and that is what is being praised. They went forth for his name’s sake, taking nothing of the Gentiles. We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to the truth. The whole economy of the early mission sits inside that sentence, and it depended on people like Gaius.

    Diotrephes, Who Loveth the Preeminence

I wrote unto the church, but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not. He prates against us with malicious words, he refuses to receive the brethren, and he casts out of the church the people who want to. Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. It is the only place in Scripture where a church difficulty is named after the man causing it.

    Demetrius Hath Good Report

Demetrius has a good report of all men, and of the truth itself, and we also bear record, which is three witnesses for one man who was most likely carrying this letter. Then the same close as the other letter: I had many things to write, but I will not with ink and pen write unto thee. Peace be to thee. Greet the friends by name.
