Jude

Jude opens with “Contend for the Faith” and carries its history toward “Able to Keep You from Falling.” He sat down to write about our common salvation and changed his mind while writing, and he tells you so. The last two verses are one of the best known blessings in the Bible, and they are the more surprising for what they follow.

  1. 01

    Jude 1–4

    Contend for the Faith

He sat down to write about our common salvation and changed his mind while writing, and he tells you so. It was needful for me to write unto you and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. The reason is that certain men have crept in unawares, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God.

    Jude 5–16

    Woe unto Them

The examples come fast and from everywhere: Israel destroyed after being saved out of Egypt, angels who left their own habitation, Sodom, Michael disputing about the body of Moses and not daring to bring a railing accusation, Cain, Balaam, Korah. Then the images, which are the best writing in the letter: clouds without water, trees twice dead, raging waves foaming out their own shame, wandering stars.

    Jude 17–23

    Building Up Yourselves

Remember the words which were spoken before by the apostles, that there should be mockers in the last time. Then the instruction, which is far quieter than everything around it: building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, keep yourselves in the love of God. And of some have compassion, making a difference, and others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire.

    Jude 24–25

Able to Keep You from Falling

The last two verses are one of the best known blessings in the Bible, and they are the more surprising for what they follow. Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Saviour be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever.
