Contend for the Faith
Jude · New Beat
[Verse 1 - bass and voice together]
Beloved, I meant to write
of the salvation we hold in common.
Then urgency took the page:
I had to turn report into appeal.
Rise. Guard what was entrusted.
[Refrain - collective]
Contend earnestly for the faith,
not a new faith, not a private design,
the faith once delivered to the saints.
Stand where it was given.
[Verse 2 - clipped warning]
Certain men slipped in unnoticed,
their condemnation marked long before.
Ungodly, they bend the grace of God
toward unrestrained desire;
they deny the only Lord God
and our Lord Jesus Christ.
[Interlude - 4 bars]
[Verse 3 - wider phrases]
Do not trade the guarded center
for the whisper at its edge.
Grace does not license the darkness
that turns its back on the Giver.
The beloved stand between
the once-delivered word and creeping denial.
[Refrain - harder cadence]
Contend earnestly for the faith.
Receive it whole; carry it clean.
Expose the hidden turning.
Stand where it was given.
[Outro - prepared-piano strike]
Once delivered.
Still defended.
