What this page covers
The videos here take Nehemiah as a whole rather than one passage at a time, so this is the ground they cover: “A Cupbearer Asks for Leave”, “A Trowel in One Hand”, “The Book Read Aloud”, “A Confession, and a Signed Covenant” and “What Happens When He Leaves”.
A Cupbearer Asks for Leave (Nehemiah 1–3). News reaches the palace at Susa that the wall of Jerusalem is broken down and the gates are burned, and the king’s cupbearer weeps and fasts for months before he says a word. When the king finally notices his face he asks for timber, letters and time. He rides around the ruins alone at night, and the list of builders that follows includes goldsmiths, perfumers and one man’s daughters.
What Happens When He Leaves (Nehemiah 11–13). Jerusalem is repopulated by lot, and the wall is dedicated by two choirs walking round it in opposite directions until they meet at the temple, loud enough to be heard far off. Then Nehemiah goes back to Persia. He returns to find Tobiah living in a temple storeroom, the Levites gone back to their fields because nobody paid them, trading as usual on the Sabbath, and children who cannot speak the language of Judah.
