Esther

Esther opens with “A Queen Who Said No” and carries its history toward “A Feast That Is Still Kept.” Six months of banqueting end with a drunk king summoning Vashti to be looked at, and her refusal costs her the crown. On the day chosen for their destruction the Jews fight and are not destroyed, and three times the text notes that they did not touch the plunder.

    A Queen Who Said No

Six months of banqueting end with a drunk king summoning Vashti to be looked at, and her refusal costs her the crown. A search brings young women in from the whole empire, and a Jewish orphan raised by her older cousin is taken into the palace and told to say nothing about who she is. Mordecai overhears an assassination plot at the gate, reports it, and is written into the record and forgotten.

A Sleepless Night and a Gallows

The king cannot sleep, has the chronicles read to him, and finds out that the man who saved his life was never rewarded. Haman arrives to ask permission for a hanging and is sent to lead his enemy through the streets instead. At the second banquet Esther names him, and he dies on the gallows he built. The first decree cannot be cancelled, so a second one lets the Jews stand and defend themselves.

A Feast That Is Still Kept

On the day chosen for their destruction the Jews fight and are not destroyed, and three times the text notes that they did not touch the plunder. Mourning turns into a holiday with food carried to neighbours and gifts sent to the poor, and it is named Purim after the dice Haman threw. God is never once mentioned in the book, and is not hard to find in it.
