Job

Job opens with “A Wager Job Never Hears About” and carries its history toward “Out of the Whirlwind.” Two conversations happen in heaven that Job is never told about, and then the messengers arrive one after another until everything is gone. God answers out of the storm and asks questions instead of giving reasons: where were you, can you bind the Pleiades, have you seen the doors of the sea.

    The Friends Explain

Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar take turns on a single idea: God is just, suffering is punishment, so confess. Job answers that he would confess if anyone would tell him what to confess, that they are miserable comforters, and that he wants to put his case to God directly. In the middle of it he says the thing they cannot: though he slay me, yet will I trust in him.

    Count the Prosperous Wicked

Eliphaz finally names crimes Job never committed. Job answers that he would state his case if he could only find the courtroom, and points at the evidence in plain sight: the wicked live long, grow rich and die comfortable in their beds.
