[Verse 1] Bildad rebukes Job's words as a strong wind. Bildad interprets the death of Job's children as the result of their transgression. The wisdom of former generations is offered because present life is only a shadow. Bildad concludes that God will not cast away the perfect and will yet fill Job's mouth with laughter. [Pre-Chorus] The speeches rose, each certain of its claim, But certainty alone could not explain. Wisdom cannot be purchased, mined, or seized, It comes from God, before whom striving ceased. [Verse 2] He maintains his integrity yet despises his life and observes calamity overtaking perfect and wicked alike. His days rush like a courier, swift ships. Even imagined cleansing cannot remove his fear of condemnation. He longs for a daysman who could lay a hand upon both parties and remove terror. [Bridge] He questions whether God despises the work of his own hands or sees as a mortal sees. Job recalls being fashioned like clay and clothed with skin, flesh, bones. He feels continually marked for sin and surrounded by renewed witnesses and war. Job again asks why he was born and seeks a little comfort before entering the land of darkness.
