The big picture

Genesis begins before any human family or nation exists. God is already present, and the earth is dark and unformed. There is no human witness, worker, or ruler here. God speaks, and the world takes shape. Light, land, plants, and animals receive their places before people arrive. The chapter ends with human beings given both food and a task within the world God has made.

Genesis 1:1-5

Light Breaks Into Darkness

The first act belongs to God: he creates heaven and earth. The earth has no settled form and is empty. Darkness covers the deep water, while God's Spirit moves above it. God then commands light to appear, and light comes. He calls it good and separates it from darkness. He names the light Day and the darkness Night. Evening and morning mark the first day. Nothing in this opening suggests a struggle between equal powers. What God says takes effect.

In everyday life

A stage designer stands before a dark, empty theatre and switches on the first light. The beam marks a space that had no visible shape. She begins deciding which areas stay dark and which receive light. Her plan starts becoming clear. She works with equipment already made; Genesis begins with God creating heaven and earth.

Notice

Genesis 1:4 God calls the light good before any person can use it. Its value begins with God's own judgment, rather than human approval.

Genesis 1:6-25

Land and Living Things Appear

God separates the waters with an expanse called Heaven. He gathers the lower waters so dry land appears. Plants grow on the land, each with seeds for more growth. Next come lights that mark days, seasons, and years. The larger light rules the day, and the smaller rules the night. God fills the seas with living creatures and the sky with birds. He blesses them to multiply. Land animals follow, from cattle to creatures that creep. Each group receives its place in a world prepared to support life. God repeatedly calls what he makes good.

In everyday life

Two gardeners prepare a neglected community plot. They clear drainage channels, mark beds, and plant seeds in soil suited to each crop. They add water dishes and flowering plants for insects. Soon the space holds many kinds of life, each with room to grow. The gardeners arrange a small habitat; God makes the world and its creatures.

Genesis 1:22 The first blessing here goes to sea creatures and birds. God gives them life and also directs them to fill their surroundings.

8And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

Genesis 1:26-31

People Receive Rule and Food

Human beings enter after the other living creatures. God makes them in his own image, both male and female. That gives people a special relation to God and a task within creation. God blesses them, tells them to multiply, and gives them rule over other creatures. He also gives seed-bearing plants and fruit for their food. Animals receive green plants to eat. The whole world is supplied with life and food. Looking at everything together, God calls it very good. The sixth day closes with creation complete in its living fullness.

In everyday life

The owner of a small orchard gives a brother and sister keys to the gate. She entrusts both with its care and shows them the fruit they can share. Their authority comes with work to do and a place to live. An orchard can be handed over by contract; bearing God's image is no hired position.

Notice

Genesis 1:27 Male and female both bear God's image. The verse does not give one sex a closer likeness to God than the other.
