- 1 John
[Verse 1 - fingerpicked]
Love did not begin in my reaching.
Love came from God before my reply.
The only begotten Son entered the world
so we might live through him.
Not that we loved God first,
he loved us and sent the propitiation.
[Refrain - changing last line]
Beloved, pass the love along.
What came from God must move between us.
Beloved, pass the love along.
No one has seen God at any time.
[Verse 2 - wider]
When we love one another, God dwells in us;
his love grows complete in its living.
He gave us of his Spirit.
We testify: the Father sent the Son,
the Saviour of the world.
Confess Jesus as the Son of God;
abide in him, and he in you.
[Refrain - altered]
Beloved, pass the love along.
We have known and believed the love of God.
Beloved, pass the love along.
As he is, so are we in this world.
[Verse 3 - unaccompanied answer]
Perfected love stands bold at judgment.
Perfect love drives tormenting fear outside.
Fear still counts the punishment;
love has not yet finished its work there.
We love him because he loved us first.
[Bridge - short and direct]
Say, I love God,
while hatred grips the brother you can see,
the mouth has made itself a liar.
Love for the unseen God
cannot abandon the visible brother.
[Refrain - shortened]
Beloved, pass the love along.
This is the command we carry:
whoever loves God,
love your brother also.
[Outro - voice and guitar]
Love began in God.
Let it tell the truth in us.

About the passage
1 John 4: The confessed Son and the love that makes God known
Chapter 4 begins with discernment because the presence of spiritual language proves nothing by itself. The test centers on confession of Jesus Christ come in the flesh and on reception of the apostolic witness. From there the chapter turns to love, but it does not leave love undefined. "God is love" is explained through the Father's sending of his only begotten Son so that life might come through him, with propitiation for sins at the center of the act. The unseen God is made known through the Spirit, the witness concerning the Son, confession, and the community's love for one another. That love reaches maturity in boldness regarding judgment rather than fear of punishment. The chapter then ends where its tests have been heading all along: hatred of a visible brother exposes the falsity of professed love for the unseen God.
