[Intro - unaccompanied] We are not repeating a rumor. We heard. We saw. We looked long. Our hands handled the Word of life. [Verse 1 - piano answers] Life stepped into the open; the witnesses could no longer be silent. Eternal life was with the Father and was manifested unto us. What we saw and heard we now declare, so fellowship may widen to you. [Refrain - invitation] Come into the light with us. Our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. These words are written that your joy may be full. [Verse 2 - darker turnaround] God is light; darkness has no room in him. A mouth may claim fellowship while its feet choose the night. The claim cannot make the walking true. But when we walk together in the light, the blood of Jesus cleanses every sin. [Breakdown - voice and piano] Say we have no sin,the mirror keeps the lie. Confess it,the hidden thing enters the light. He is faithful. He is just. He forgives and cleanses all unrighteousness. Say we never sinned,we call God a liar and leave his word outside. [Refrain - changed last line] Come into the light with us. Little children, the writing says: sin not. Yet if anyone sins, we have an Advocate, Jesus Christ the righteous. [Outro - solo voice] He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but for the sins of the whole world. Let the joy be full.

About the passage

1 John 1: Life made manifest, fellowship brought into the light

The Book of 1 John opens by refusing to let eternal life become an abstraction. What is announced was heard, seen, closely observed, and handled, and the purpose of announcing it is fellowship with the witnesses, the Father, and Jesus Christ. From there the chapter turns immediately to light. God has no darkness in him, so claims of fellowship are measured against the life being lived. Yet light does not mean pretending sin has disappeared. The people who walk in it still need cleansing through Christ's blood. The chapter then separates three kinds of speech: denial of sin, confession of sins, and denial of having sinned. Confession stands in the middle as truthful fellowship, grounded not in human performance but in God's being "faithful and just."

1 John 2: A known Christ, an enacted commandment, a truth that remains

Chapter 2 holds provision and testing together without allowing either to cancel the other. Jesus Christ is the advocate and propitiation for sin, yet knowledge of him is still tested through obedience and a walk corresponding to his own. The old commandment becomes new in the light of Christ, and hatred of a brother exposes darkness no matter how confidently light is claimed. Reassurance then interrupts the warnings: forgiveness, knowledge of the Father, strength, and victory are already named gifts. Against that background come two dangers, love of a passing world and teachers who deny the Son. The answer to both is remaining in what was heard from the beginning. The anointing does not erase all teaching. It makes a replacement gospel unnecessary, and abiding carries forward into righteousness and confidence at Christ's appearing.
