- 1 John
[Chorus - immediate]
This is the victory,faith overcomes the world.
Jesus is the Christ; Jesus is the Son.
Born of God, we love the Father
and love the children born of him.
[Verse 1 - syncopated]
Love for God takes shape in his commands,
and his commands are not a crushing load.
Who rises over the world's pressure?
The one who believes the Son of God.
[Post-Chorus - two records]
Father, Word, and Holy Ghost bear record in heaven.
Spirit, water, and blood agree on earth.
God's record is greater than man's,
and the record is carried within the believer.
[Verse 2 - longer lines]
Call God false by refusing his Son,
or receive what God has testified:
eternal life is given,
and this life is in his Son.
Who has the Son has life;
who has not the Son of God has not life.
[Chorus - note values doubled]
This is the victory,faith overcomes the world.
These things are written so believers may know:
you have eternal life,
and may believe on the name of the Son of God.
[Breakdown - drums fall away]
Ask according to his will; he hears.
See a brother in sin not unto death; ask life for him.
All unrighteousness is sin;
the distinction concerning death remains.
The one born of God keeps himself;
the wicked one does not touch him.
[Verse - rising]
We are of God;
the whole world lies in wickedness.
The Son has come and given understanding
to know the One who is true.
We are in the true One through Jesus Christ,
the true God and eternal life.
[Outro - held tonic]
Little children, keep yourselves from idols.
Amen.

About the passage
1 John 5: The testimony that grounds confidence
Chapter 5 gathers faith, love, obedience, testimony, assurance, and prayer around the Son. Belief that Jesus is the Christ belongs to birth from God, and love for the Father is joined to love for his children. Victory over the world is attributed to faith rather than to social control or freedom from ordinary defeat. The witness concerning Jesus then comes through water, blood, and the Spirit, with the King James including additional heavenly-witness wording that raises a distinct textual question. God's record itself is clear: eternal life is in his Son, and the letter is written so believers may know they have that life. Confidence then enters prayer under the governing phrase "according to his will" and meets the difficult boundary of sin unto death. The chapter closes with repeated "we know" statements and a final warning against idols.
